does anyone know the correct arrangement for the plates in order to get to the buttons to open the gates

I believe it's
SpoilerShow
In the left room, leave the north plate untouched.
In the right room, leave the south and west plates untouched. This means you'll have to put something on the west plate, then take it off when you're outside the room and done.
