Level 4 - What does this lever do?

I'm on my second playthrough of the game, playing on hard this time. I noticed a lever in level 4 which I have no idea what it does. The lever is found
after you place all the 4 scrolls on the altar and those green little guys come out from the walls, after defeating them you can check behind the walls and there is the lever. I've tried it in both the up and down state and looked around but can't find out what function it has. Can anyone tell me? Here are some screenshots for the exact location:

That lever will
switch on/off the portals to the separated parts of the level.
I hope I remembered that right.

How do you mean? Does it de-activate them or do you mean that they will take me somewhere else?

When you open the gate with the scrolls, the four corner teleporters are turned off. That switch turns them back on. This is (IMO) done so you cannot run away from the tough monsters that enter the room when you open the gate by jumping through the teleporters.
