Tactic Tricks

Sacrificing shield in hand can be a good place to keep bombs, throwing weapons and spears for the rear guys to use after initial ammunition or energy runs out. It can speed the swap a lot with only negligible penalty to evasion.
As I loved my unarmed mastery minotaur's attack speed I had to incorporate new tactics when the other guy was swinging heavy stuff.
Getting a cycle for weapon clicking and sticking to it can be more beneficial than trying to press each button as fast as possible.
You may incorporate inventory into that cycle by breaking it into steps. At first I had to practice by splitting it into three steps, but later on I used two combat 'turns' to do all swaps:
1. Open Inventory and locate item
2. Swap it and close inventory
... Continue combat cycle
Practicing such cycles on my back line characters I had some pretty cool combat herbalogy going on as well.
With only two characters alive, nothing like spending four mana potions in a continuous combat before finding a safe place.
And of course the mother of all hints:
Close the doors behind you!
