Wall text is present in the new version to assist with this:
NW altar = Chapel of Fire
NE = Chapel of Air
SW = Chapel of Earth
SE = Chapel of Ice

Do you have the latest version (1.1)? I added an additional clue for that one. If you just started playing I would definitely get the latest as there are some improvements all throughout the dungeon.
The combination worked only for bombs and not with the scrolls found on the level as putting them on the altar did nothing.
Maybe this was corrected with 1.1

Found that I have a mispelling for the fireball scroll, but the others should have worked. Also, this level accepts only attack scrolls, not defensive scrolls.
