Fighter unarm combat

Hi I'm trying to use unarm combat but I'm wondering if I equip shield on my right hand would it affect the unarm combat skill or not? Or I need to empty both of my hand to use the unarm skill?

Only the main hand needs to be empty. The second hand can hold anything you want.
