Early game golden keys

Post by snarfalarkus »

So i've found a good amount of golden keys that can be found very early on:

One from that buried chest in twigroot,

one from the captain statue on the beach,

one in a chest in the water under the broken bridge at forgotten island,

one from the rat in the cache,

one underwater in the underwater vault

Does anyone know any other locations of keys that can be obtained in the early game?

I have yet to finish the game myself so I don't know if this is true, but I have heard people say that you only get half or slightly more then half enough golden keys to open all of the doors. If it IS true, then I'd hang onto them and spend the sparingly!

It IS true, you don't get enough keys to open every gold door. But there are also some doors that are just pointless to open as the item inside can be found somewhere else in the game for free if you know where it is or, as happens a lot, the item inside is just worse and weaker than other golden locked items or other items in the game.

The best example of that second one is, just below the Hub in the Forgotten River is a golden lock with a wand/staff in it, However, a little further below is the Cashe and the mage Golden Lock there has a better Orb and more stuff in it, making the one below the hub completely useless and will never be gotten except by noobs not knowing there is a better one nearby. Also a little bit north in the Sleet Island, there is a puzzle with another orb that is even BETTER than the 2 golden locks orb/wand/staffs and it free. In fact, I used that free orb the entire game until doing the optional Pyramid which I think has the a better staff hidden in it, again without needing a golden key.

So yes, you can't open them all, but if you know the game and where all the items are, you'll probably only need to open 2-3 of them. The rest are just pointless. And I hate this. In LoG 1 there were 6 locked doors and 2 keys in the entire game. 3 doors near the midway point, and 3 doors near the end of the game. And the 3 near the end are just plain better. So you had a choice, open a mid one with the first gold key, get a boost but only 1 epic loot at the end. Or save it, have a slightly harder time, but get to the end and you get 2 epic loot doors.

Here however in LoG2, since you can go ANYWHERE at ANYTIME in the game, most of the gold locks are pointless because you can go at lvl 1 to the places to get all the better gear and doesn't take much to be able to use them.

to the OP
There are 8 total.
The only other one you might be able to get early on with some strategy is the one in Stormbreach. (Problem there is those 3 maniac Wargs in early game)
the other 2 are fairly deep in.

As far as not enough Golden Keys and some redundant or lesser level gear in some of them that is a cool design. imo
Once you know where all the awesome stuff is it is possible to plot a course using golden keys and lockpicks for a very powerful team.
My first playthrough I got to the Vault when only one item was worth it to grab.
The next time it was quite useful for me to open the steel vault.
This third time it seems the best item is the mirror one and the one with the crystal flower in it.
I think more so than in LOG1 the design of 2 allows for different types of mastery of the Isle.
Of course without the ability to mod many things the replay is limited.

You mean the staff of ruling? It has the most powerful ability. I am halfway on hard, ironman, single-use crystals, when you can't take any chances it saves your skin. You can even cast it into a wall to put yourself into a field. It is also useful on normal for 2 or 3 spots.

I did. Here, let me add pictures to show.

Ok, first one you find is in the Cashe:

And as this picture will show:
SpoilerShow
The Item involved is the Orb of Radience. +15 Energy, Light Spell. Useless to anyone with a magic user or even someone with just 2 Con for extra energy for Power Attacks
Image
Then a little further north, like 10 feet up from the Cashe, is this:
SpoilerShow
Image
And here, you'll find:
SpoilerShow
The nectarbranch wand. +5 Energy, +1 Will. Most useless Orb/staff in the entire game I think. Except maybe the very first one you find which gives just +5 energy
Image
But then a little more north in the next zone, 1-2 mins away, is this puzzle:
SpoilerShow
Image
Which gives you this:
SpoilerShow
The Stormseed Orb. +15 Energy, +2 Dex, and Lightning Bolt spell 9 free times before needing a recharge
Image
The first 2 are locked behind Golden Keys and the third one is just behind a little puzzle that's easy to complete. And yet all 3 are right next to eachother, not even 3 mins apart. If they were close but slightly different for different situations, I could understand. Like the Fire Longsword and Lightning Longsword. But no, these 3 are completely different, and the first is clearly better than the second, and the third is better than them both and doesn't need to waste a gold key!

And I can point this out with most Gold locks in the game. Some of the items hidden behind gold locks are just completely useless and pointless. I mean, look at the Snake Charmer in the Cashe. A Spell, a +50 Poison Resist Bracelet, and Rope... A poison Bracelet you find multiple times threw out the game, and a pointless rope... Or the one that just has 50 Pellets and 10 Cannonballs only... And don't get me started on the ones with just 1 single piece of Item set! Like the Rogue Boots, Meteor Boots, Crystal Shield, Archmage Hat, and so on! Heck, I think there are only 3 bows in the entire game, 1 normal and 2 Magical and the Magical ones are each behind Gold Locks! One in the Thief Cashe and the other in the Crystal Mines.

So yeah, very disappointed because so many locked choices, but most are worthless and pointless >.<

Uhhh...how exactly is the rope in the snake charmer's cache pointless? As far as I know the only other rope in the game is in the Crystal Mines, which is much, much later even if you beeline for it.
