Roster suggestion

Post by affa »

Right now, characters seem tied to saved games.

It would be great, especially as dungeons are added (from the dev as dlc, or user created) to be able to have a roster of heroes from your other games to use to play through them.

Dungeons would need control settings to ensure balance -- for example, one dungeon might only be able to start with level 1 characters, or no characters over level 30, or one could require level 45 characters, etc.

However, i'd love to be able to take my guys on more missions.

Issues that may need to be dealt with:
1) can a hero go on multiple missions at the same time? i'd say yes... they don't need to be actually 'at the same time', even if you're playing them at the same time. also this prevents user created dungeons from perma-trapping your favorite hero with intentionally bad design.
2) what if someone creates an easy grinder dungeon? no problem. different people play different ways, so as long as all other dungeons have level requirements, the fact that someone cheesed a level 50 character doesn't really matter.

anyway, i think this would be a great addition to the RPG elements of the game, and easily let us select a squad for our newest dungeon exploration.

it also creates interesting dynamics - if you've been developing 8 characters (two runs through Grimlock) and you then play a different dungeon with 2 from each of those teams, once they finish you now have them leveled up to, say, 25, but your other 4 are still level 14 or so. Eventually you'll have a small army of different level'd characters to choose between for each new dungeon foray.

I'd love it.

Sounds good, I can see custom dungeons being created for a certain level eventually, and the cool thing is the game supports higher level characters really well by default. :D

The problem with picking rosters is that you would easily end up with lots of cloned items, which is not is not great in my book. Stripping them naked on import could work, though.

hmm. i think this could be managed at the dungeon level.

when someone creates a dungeon, they can check a box that forces characters to 'strip down' to no equipment, or let them carry in whatever they want from other games.

in most cases, stripping down does make more sense, since it removes the ability for someone to create an uber weapon in some grinder map to be used in all other games.

the other option, though more complicated, is for the game to use a simple formula to determine the 'level' of a weapon (based on damage, speed, and special powers) and then let dungeon creaters limit the weapon level imported characters from the roster carry.

however, in my original idea, i think i imagined them always just stripped down. but now that i think on it more, i like the idea of weapon levels... that way you can carry that ice hammer you got in grimlock around with you wherever you want (unless a dungeon prohibited it).

but you'd then need an 'item storehouse' in addition to just a roster. so more complicated, but very much worth the effort if it ever got done. Grimlock could easily turn into a very long lasting 'dungeon creator' type game with a fan base that lasts years upon years, with the right tools and mods.

as such, proper in-between game character management (roster) and item management would go a long way.

It would be nice if we could scale our dungeons by starting levels of fighters. That way parties who have completed the Grimrock dungeon don't have to be penalized and get their gear taken away. This would also allow newer teams to be created without being overwhelmed.

Or maybe make every team only able to play a dungeon and keep the equipment once. If they replay the same dungeon they lose the stuff they got in a previous run, but if they play a new one they don't.
