Sorry. I was half asleep when I posted, and didn't make it clear that I was meaning as an explanation for the strafing issue (which might explain it as a separate issue if a similar explanation was found for the going backwards one).

If you cast the spell after strafing so a wall is directly in front of you, then the spell will hit in the square in front of the wall, ie the one you're in. That also applies for gates which are rising, as I know to my cost.

You'd probably need to use one of the mods that adds a method of teleporting, if you want to recreate the dungeon accurately. Portalcraft is the obvious choice.

What you need to realise is that most of the time that you play, especially on the first playthrough, you'll be using spells you've learnt from scrolls. While, with your idea, the rune system would still 'exist', in that you could cast with that, you have no real reason to. Why would you, if you can...

Alternatively, if you have a delay between pressing backwards and moving, you could try pressing S before you click. In my experience, the game seems to be faster at processing clicks than key presses.
